New Coworking Space - printer?

My friend and I are opening a coworking space. We are considering providing printing but it looks like most of the smaller spaces don’t offer this benefit. Is it common to offer printing? Does the average member need printing? Thoughts…Comments…Please and Thank you

Hi Ehmandah.

I work in a small place at Ribeirão Preto, Brazil an we offer printing, but just p/b.

It’s very useful for few pages.

Every coworking plan has 20 to 50 pages per month.

We didn’t have a printer for our entire first year of operation. We added it from our profits, instead of buying it before anybody needed it. Nothing is worse than spending money on something that nobody wants or cares about.

We still only have a medium range laser printer and a relationship with a couple of local print shops for bigger jobs.

It totally depends on your members. There’s no such thing as an “average” member and if there was, you’d struggle to serve them because they want everything

Our members find having a printer convenient but it’s not a “make or break” component of why they’re happy to pay for membership.

I choose to go a different route with this and got a full functioning copier, printer and scanner. It has been used often by my members and after their allotted prints/copies I charge them a per page fee that helps to cover the cost of the copier. I have quite a few start ups in my space so having this benefit has been very valuable. Good luck to you!

We lease a high end copier/printer, which does A4/A3, full duplex etc, and we charge for each use use. In terms of profitability it just about breaks even. In terms of being part of the offer we find it essential. One of the things we have noticed is that our members really miss some (not many!) of the things they had when in a traditional office environment- and one of those is access to a high end printer. Best feature for me is the high speed scan to email. I can put 100 documents in the feeder, choose my email to evernote dropbox address, then scan and shred.

The only issue we have is that we’re 90% mac, and while the printer supports macs, the mac people tend to upgrade their machines the day a new mac OS comes out, while the printer manufacturer takes a month or two to release a new driver. That causes issues.
