I am a small business owner from Kolkata, India. I already have a ready office space, which i’d like to use to be a co-working space, but i have no idea about how to start up. Any and all insights are requested, welcome and will be much appreciated.
Before changing your existing office’s layout, buying new furniture, computers etc. try to build up a community. You will see if this is a business for you and your community is ready for it.

I am also a new comer, and my place haven’t open yet, but I think there are some important things you need to know before you move:
1: Decide who are you costumers, are you going to have private rooms? make your membership plans, and make your marketing plans.
2: Decide your hours, are you going to open 24/7? you might want to look Access Control System.
3: Decide your management platform, if you are not going to hire a developer(which I highly recommend not to), you might want to choose one.
4: Build a website, which can be done by yourself.
There are millions of small pieces you need to put together, I believe someone more experienced in this group can give you good advices, and ask whatever questions you have.
Best

Hi Harsh
Welcome to the world of Coworking. I have two pieces of advice for you.
Buy a copy of the book Coworking Handbook by Ramon Suarez https://www.coworkinghandbook.com/ It’s a great reference and will help you organize your thoughts.
Keep using this group. There are a lot of experienced space owners/ operators that generously share from their stumbles and successes.
Enjoy the ride.
Best,

Thanks for the response John, Will look into the links you provided.
My first concern, however, is how to build a community about this? Is there an online space for owners and clients to meet,? Is there somewhere I should enlist myself? Business environment here is very culture oriented,
and therefore, it is seeming a little tricky to reach the target market.

Really appreciate your response. But that’s just the thing. I don’t need to buy anything new, My workspace is all set up for about 20seats. Equipped with good furniture, printing support, high-speed wi-fi and modern design.
What I do understand from your reply is that I need to first build a community about this. This is a great insight Caner. And I intend to follow through. But since business environment here is very culture oriented, it
is seeming very tricky to reach the target audience. Would really appreciate any advice on that front.

Hi Harsh,
Alex Hillman has some great posts about building community and finding the right balance. I would suggest you go trough the archives and also read his blog.

Harsh, I’ve attached another handbook that allows you to explore more about creating a viable coworking space, but you are well beyond these initial considerations since you already have the space and need to begin building community.
Small events can work to attract an initial community. Indeed, Alex Hillman is an encyclopedia of knowledge and experience! Think of the types of gatherings that enable networking and interaction/community. Your specific culture in Kolkata informs the types of attractive gatherings to hold. This builds awareness of the space, you and the other members of the group that will make up the community.
As you expand the group, the events can get larger to attract more and expand awareness of what you are doing.
