Introduction: Jorge Vargas from coworking.do

Hi,

I realized I joined but didn’t introduce myself.

I’m rather new to this scene and learned about the group at GCUC.

I run coworking.do together with Laura, Luz and Guillermo in the Dominican Republic. We attended GCUC this year and ended up being fascinated by the community. And you’ll be hearing more about us

My background is in software development and I also own a software shop that specializes in python, so any questions from that area fell free to email me off list. I also organize several of the local programming communities and am more than willing to share any tips and tricks I have come up with. I’m also very involved in startupweekend if you don’t know what that is google it and if you need anything from there I’m here.

For those I met at KC you rock! lets keep things rolling and for those that couldn’t made it hope to meet you in person at the next conference.

Jorge, it was awesome to meet you and Luz in Kansas City!

Looking forward to more from you guys

Hi Jorge,
My name is Imanol. I am from Puerto Rico and I am building a coworking here in Puerto Rico.

Still don’t have a web but I think we will be able to open in one month. I would like to know

how this is going there in D.R., here there is just one coworking, still building the community.

Good luck with yours,

Imanol

Bienvenido al club Jorge!

Are you the first coworking community in DR?

Hello, first of all so sorry to not replying sooner.

To answer both of your questions. We have been way too busy which means things are going great here. We are around 50-60 members now and growing by 2-3 weekly which is great. We are having events almost every night. It’s crazy out here. But overall great.

Imanol, How’s your space going? We can keep talking off-the-list about some regional stuff if you guys are interested.

Oren, actually we are not this was the first space http://pulsocolectivo.com/ However they closed down. They were in part inspiration for us to open up and well that’s a long story but currently we are the only coworking space in the city. I have heard of one in Jarabacoa (which is a city in the mountains but I haven’t been to it yet)

It’s been over 2 months I’m embarrassed but just today I managed to clean up my inbox from the groups emails.

Hola,
Our co-working just start a soft-opening few weeks ago, and I plan to fully open the place this week or the next. Can you share your business model with us, and give us some lessons you have learned?

As for business model we are still trying to set that in stone but we have three memberships 100,50,25 (fulltime, partime and 1/4) we also get a very good revenue from events we have both organized by us and plain old rentals. We still don’t have closed offices but there is a demand there we haven’t exploited due to lack of infraestructure. We have plans of expanding into that soon TM. We also own a small coffeeshop where we sell snacks and drinks for both the members and other people in the building.

But as I have read in this list it’s a lot about your community and what works

It’s weird how we get either this reaction or people totally hate it. :stuck_out_tongue:
