I'm looking for recommendations for a great chat/collaboration tool for our coworking space members to use. What's your favorite?

I need something that allows both private and group messages. I like that HipChat has the Lobby as a general chat area and then you can also have rooms and private chats. Any other great resources like this? What does your space use to connect it’s members?

We have moved from HipChat to Slack. Usage went up after the change.

Huge +1 for Slack.

Overall, chat is a tall order though: you need to have at least enough people that it doesn’t feel empty, but as it grows it can become noisy. slack works best right now because a lot of people already use it for their companies, so the app is already open.

Between the two online gathering places that Indy Hall has - Slack and our GroupBuzz email list - we see about 10-15% overall participation in the chat room compared to 40%+ participation on GroupBuzz. And that’s just people posting, not counting people who lurk and read.

Hi,

I am one of the founders of bindrs. It is a great tool that creates co-creation spaces (like multimedia notebooks) called bindrs that let your members collaborate and chat in private across social media like Facebook and Twitter. It also supports e-mail communication if needed.

We already had success with this tool at universities and schools where they use it for group assignments. The best thing is that everyone can stay on his or her own preferred social network or can use e-mail and you can still collaborate and chat with each other.

Slack has worked really well for us.

Hello,

My name is Nikol Daru, and I work at the HNK Rotterdam coworking space. Our company is developing a platform for coworking spaces, freelancers and small companies to connect, communicate and work together.

In my experience Slack, HipChat, Asana and Glip are useful tools to chat, video call, and message within your team. They are more professional than the regular social media groups or online discussion boards.

Bisner (https://www.bisner.com/) which is our development, also has direct messaging & group chat. It supports commenting, liking and sharing in a feed similar to what you are used to in social media. It offers workspaces that help to keep more complex conversations (e.g. with files, notes, tasks, multiple people) very simple and organized.

Hope it helps!

  • several million for Slack. We’re actually considering a mini coworking network between a few local spots and we’re putting together a Slack team that allows communication between all spaces.

Wow! This is an amazing idea. I’d love to hear how you get on. Will you keep us all posted?

We have a really tight-knit group of coworking space owner/managers here in NI and I think this would work really well for collaboration between spaces, some of which are pretty small. And, since we’re talking about he Copass idea too, it would really help bind people together even before they meet at another coworking space and facilitate useful networking.

Yes slack is good for collaboration with co-working space members in addition to Webex, R-HUB web video conferencing servers, Skype etc.

We use Slack for internal staff comms between my two sites, and the recent shutdown has sped up our move for the members from Podio to Slack as well. We’ve actually had a lot of success moving our entire operation from the physical space to online- for £75 a month members get access to the Slack channel and we’re trying to replicate the ryhthms and rituals of our 7 year old space online. We’re also using Zoom alongside, and looking into Hey Summit to run a virtual conference.

We have 200 members and before shutdown of the space we saw an average income per member of £113 per month. So far we have almost 50 of them paying the £75 for the online version, and more joining every day. I’m actually quite surprised it’s been as popular as it has- we’d have launched it a lot earlier if we’d known that.

Considering we also have an anchor tenant (Intel) who pay a big chunk of change every month and will continue to do so, and a landlord who seems to be OK with us not paying our rent while we’re closed, we’re not actually doing that bad at all! Bloody love our community!
