Hello Group!
Has anyone used google chromecast for meetings (mirror laptop or tablet - PowerPoint)?
We’ve switched all of our projectors and TVs over to Chromecast in the last few months and it’s great.
The only hitch has been the occasional person who doesn’t already have Chrome installed, so we have a few HDMI cables as backup.
As a bonus, we have hooked up the same Chromecast to a system that shows member photos, reminders about events, and more. Its like a more advanced version of the built in Chromecast screen saver - once we clean it up a bit I plan to share it!

The other issue with Chromecast is you can only cast to one at a time. You can’t one source to multiple chromecasts.

We did at the last place I worked.
We had twin 55" color TV's, each with a Chromecast one named TV Left and one named TV Right. Worked reasonably well for both Mac and PC, especially using the almost hidden share your whole screen option. But you need to have Chrome installed on the computer.

Ok. Thanks for the info. That's a great idea....member photos and events. Nice.
So the user needs to have installed on their phone/tablet or computer? Is it an app?
Chromecast is a Chrome extension (you can install it from the Chrome extensions store).
We do sometime use it, but it doens’t work in all cases - for example, it doesn’t show you the mouse cursor, so it’s not practical for training. You also can’t use if you want to 'cast something that is not in a web page. Don’t give away all of you video adapters!

Be careful with the latest updates to Chromecast. It’s not really designed to be used on a public network anyway (anyone on the same SSID can cast to one at any time, which at the fun end means getting rickrolled from time to time, but also can lead to angry room bookers!).
And now, for reasons known only to themselves, Google have updated the mobile app so that if ANYONE is using a Chromecast on the network, EVERYONE with the app installed gets a notification pop up, and can control the cast. Only way around it is at the client end (as in each of your members mobile devices!)
Make sure you have some kind of network setup to avoid this happening!

Thank you so much for the information. Really trying to find a cost effective solution for meetings.
The most cost effective solution is using cables instead of wireless, though I’ll come back to wireless in a second. The good part about cables is that they basically always work, no installation necessary. They’re easy/cheap to replace (and even have backups in a drawer or on a shelf).
The downside to cables is: they’re messy, and adapters are hell. I can’t count how many times someone has shown up looking for an adapter that we later couldn’t find, delaying their meeting and creating an overall lousy experience.
In terms of wirelessly projecting to TVs and screens, we’ve played with a mix of AppleTV (only works with Apple Devices, and is remarkably unreliable for screen sharing) + Chromecast and without a doubt Chromecast has been the best option on the market. I’ve seen more specialized tools but they cost a lot more and still require a special download. Chrome is cross platform and depending on your audience, most people are likely to already have it installed or at least be familiar with it.
Chromecast is smart enough to not allow broadcasts to interrupt each other - aka if someone is in a meeting and broadcasting to the screen, somebody else isn’t going to be able to cast a youtube video or something else disruptive. Frankly, if that were to happen I’d consider that a bigger issue than one caused by the potential of the Chromecast and something we’d focus on at the community level.
And in my experience - especially as we’ve grown - we’ve always have to spend more effort helping people know that the Chromecast option exists than trying to prevent mis-use and abuse.
In reality, there’s a finite possible number of bad things that can happen. You can spend all of your energy on those, you’ll never get the benefits of the infinite possible good things that can happen keep it simple, for you and for your members!

Community wise it’s not too bad, as people leave it alone, but visitors have got alarmed/think they’ve been hacked/close the app and stop the music. Looks like we’re going to have to rethink it, and have an isolated network of some kind for the chromecasts.

At Indy Hall we have several Chromecast TVs and HDMI devices (not the audio-broadcast ones) and haven’t seen any kind of notification issues.
Our music system is a WHOLE other story - but I finally feel like we got that situated this year, too!

At Indy Hall we have several Chromecast TVs and HDMI devices (not the audio-broadcast ones) and haven’t seen any kind of notification issues.
Our music system is a WHOLE other story - but I finally feel like we got that situated this year, too!

That would be excellent if you could share the Chromecast “member screen” tool! Thank you, Alex.
What I’d love to see is a version that could rotate the display output 90 degrees (so I can mount a vertical TV). I’ve only heard of that functionality on expensive boxes.

The only hitch has been the occasional person who doesn’t already have Chrome installed, so we have a few HDMI cables as backup.
As a bonus, we have hooked up the same Chromecast to a system that shows member photos, reminders about events, and more. Its like a more advanced version of the built in Chromecast screen saver - once we clean it up a bit I plan to share it!
