I’m pleased to share these shots of our launch party last Friday
here in the East SF Bay, at The Factory 510, our new coworking space
for art, tech startups, and makers!
Hoopers and an aerial show? Now this is a way to launch a space!
Thanks for sharing this, Andie! It’s great to see another example of a community that is so much more culturally rich than just a shared workspace.
I’d love to hear more about how this all came to be, and any advice you have to share on developing a space for what looks to be a great participatory community.
And an extra +1 for repurposing an old factory in the process!

Thanks Tony! The long and short of it is that we started from a
place of having space and then asking every day “What wants to
happen within our existing community and the people who are showing
up right now to participate in the space we have on hand today?”
We've had to be a bit more fluid as a result, but we're fortunate to
exist in a setting where that’s possible. My partner and I both have
strong ties to the Burning Man community, so much of our network is
already made up of this highly connected type of participation from
creatives across the art/tech/maker sphere.
Our concept is really made possible by the fact that the space
where we offer coworking here at our building, The Gate 510, is also an attractive resource for building management’s existing
and new tenants at this commercial property. By enlivening the space
with coworking and temporary/short term users, we make the whole
building more attractive for long term tenants too, so we enjoy a
great relationship with them as their tenants, and have been a part
of “placemaking” for them around the building, in addition to
building our own community of coworkers and short term private space
members.
I'll have to write it all up in detail someday...the transparency
and supportiveness here in this community has been so helpful!
