Explaining what a CoWorking space is

Need help friends. I'm having a bit of time explaining what a CoWorking space is. People aren't grabbing the concept.

Howdy Ehmandah!

What kinds of folks are you talking to about it? What is it about the concept that they’re not understanding? And why is it important to you to get them to understand it?

Pending those answers: I’d wonder how you might be able to tune into the kind of shared language these people do have, and use that to tune into how you can talk to them using that language.

Hi Tony!

Some entrepreneurs and freelancers. Most are thinking about the concept renting offices in a building or cubicles. I just want to give some of my colleagues a clearer understanding.

Thanks for the response.

Hi Alex!

I’ve explained it as a shared space. Freelancers and or entrepreneurs working together yet independently…a community. I think most people think of it as a place to rent offices.

Got it!

So - it’s a real challenge to tell people what something is that they’ve never seen before. When you lead by talking about shared space, no matter how much you talk about community people are going to think about what they know related to offices. It’s like that thing where I tell you DONT THINK OF A PINK ELEPHANT and you can’t help think of a pink elephant

Even in 2016, most people in most places have never heard of Coworking: http://dangerouslyawesome.com/2014/10/what-to-do-when-people-dont-understand-coworking/
Meanwhile, before you have a community, it’s hard to point to a community that’s GOING to exist…because it doesn’t exist yet.

So the best starting point is to talk about the problem.

The question you need to ask is, when people can work from anywhere, why wouldn’t they just work from home in their underwear for free?

The answer, of course, is loneliness. Feeling isolated and disconnected.

Describing what a Coworking space IS is kind of like describing what a restaurant is to someone whose never seen one. Why would I pay for someone else to make me a meal when I have a kitchen at home?

So talk about what it’s like to be lonely and isolated. Tell your own story. Learn other peoples’ stories and tell theirs or encourage them to tell them on their own. In every interaction, find ways to highlight that loneliness, and then remind people that the easiest way to fix that is to come together.

And then help make it easy for THOSE people to come together. Do that before you start looking for space. Go to events together. Host your own events together. Work together. Play together.

And then when people realize that being together is SO MUCH BETTER than being alone…a membership to a place where they can come together anytime they want starts to make a lot more sense.

But understanding who these people are, and how they feel isolated, is really the key to starting the right conversations.

Good luck - give it a try and let us know how it goes

Thanks Alex. You're awesome. I will definitely take this approach and let you guys know.

Thanks again everyone.

Hi,

Its interesting to read this note. We are developing a co-working space in New Delhi and the concept of co-working is still quite at a nascent stage. So for entrepreneurs to understand what co-working really is, we’ve broken it down to a few points on how a shared space helps them in their business. The points are -

  1. Increased productivity
  2. Increased networking and collaboration opportunity
  3. Flexible workspace - that is you dont really need to plan a year in advance of what you’re team strength is going to be. If any person is added, seating for that person is quite flexible. Even downsizing team strength is simple.
  4. Accessible - Our coworking space is next to all public transport facilities
  5. Your business remains asset light and reflects well on the balance sheet
  6. Plug & play - you only need a laptop and a phone to run your business
Im sure these points when talked about, will make it clear as to what it really is.

“Coworking is a style of work that involves a shared working environment, often an office, and independent activity. Unlike in a typical office environment, those coworking are usually not employed by the same organization.”

This means that “coworking” offices provide independent workers all the benefits and motivational aspects of an office space, while each coworker is focused on his or her own work. In today’s digital age, we are always “connected”, but are in a sense disconnected from the person-to-person aspect of business. Often times, digital workers find themselves in ruts of motivation, accountability, or networking efforts due to the singularity and loneliness that can be associated with working digitally.

Corporate enterprises can also take advantage of coworking space offices. The average person can have up to a 2-hour commute just to get to the office from their home. Utilizing a coworking space located closer to the employee’s home can cut down on lengthy commutes that affect work life balance and wellness, without lost productivity and accountability.

LifeWorking provides a bridge between the typical, 9-5 office bustle and the true work life balance of telecommuting, freelancing, or entrepreneurship. Our coworking spaces are available for independent freelancers, hungry entrepreneurs, and corporate employees that want to cut commute time. Our first office, located in Lake Forest, IL, welcomes and encourage all types of coworkers - no matter what their priorities.
