Which coworking spaces have worked successfully with local government
to get a space going? I have worked with my town. Just wondering who
else has done the same. ex. received loans, grants, free rent, etc.

I'm talking to my County government about more assistance and need
other examples to share with them. Hopefully we can make a list of
relationship precedence to benefit all.

Thanks!

-Brian

Brian,

We have an active relationship with the city we operate in. I would be more than willing to discuss what works and what does not work in dealing with municipalities. As well as the pros and cons to entering into such relationships.

Try taking a look at our coworking space : [http://www.moseleyexchange.com](http://www.moseleyexchange.com)

It was started with assistance from Birmingham City Council, Advantage
West Midlands and with assistance from ERDF funding. Since opening in
mid 2009 we have recruited more than 50+ members with some already
moving thro and setting up larger offices.

Happy to have a dialogue with anyone else seeking assistance in
setting up this way...

Would folks who have received some sort of assistance from local
government provide the following to the group?
1) Name of Your Space
2) Name of Municipality you worked with
3) Type of Assistance: ex. Loan Money, free rent, etc.

My interest is only to provide examples to my County of other
municipalities that have assisted Coworking spaces. Here's my info.

Name of Space: Carrboro Creative Coworking
Name of Municipality: Town of Carrboro, North Carolina
Type of Assistance: Loan

Thanks,

Contact Blake Burris at CoHabitat in Shreveport (or Dallas.) The
Shreveport space has local government and economic development
involvement.

And if you find the magic sauce pass it on. 🙂

Cheers!

I am presenting to my City Council on Tuesday, any pointers welcomed. I have a small ask for our pilot location in a city owned building which I hope to scale in a more dedicated location. There is an undefined sales tax fund we have defined towards “Economic Development” which I am requesting from. What was any of you here process?

Thank you all in advance,

Carina

Hi Carina,

I’m on the board of a non-profit that is working to open a space that’s a mix of artist studios, coworking, civic space, and economic development resources. We successfully sought a town Economic Development grant last fall and just signed a land development agreement for a long-term lease of a 9,000 sf town building.

The grant we received was primarily to do the market survey and analysis to identify needs of the local community and find out what kinds of resources they are looking for in a creative workspace.

It was important in our process to really quantify the economic need. We sourced lots of detail from prior reports and studies that have been done before, especially as it relates to very small business (1-4 employees), the incomes of year-round artists, and the lack of affordable office and studio space.

You can find more details of our project on our web site at [http://commonsptown.org](http://commonsptown.org)
